“My entire carpet was flooded after my water pipes burst into pieces. W.D.R.C came to our rescue and was able to vacuum all of the water out at a really fast pace. Need Professional Water Mitigation & Damage Repair?
Daniel Briggs can best be described as a man's man. He loved working with his hands and spending time in the great outdoors. He could fix a car, tend a garden, or fish and hunt with the best of them. If you needed help with anything, a phone call was all it took for Dan to come to your aid. And if his grandchildren asked, Grandpa was always ready and willing to color and play. Daniel Briggs was a private person, but his family always knew that they were first in his heart. How lucky they were!
As the decade known as 'The Forties' came to a close, the country was going through some changes. It was the beginning of the 'Cold War' and the minimum wage was now 43 cents an hour, with the average annual salary climbing to $1,441. And wonder of wonders, 55% of U.S. homes had indoor plumbing. For Willis and Frances (Hubbard) Briggs, life in Grand Rapids, MI was full of wonders, seven of them to be exact. Willis and Frances had seven children - four girls: Ruth, Bonnie, Shirley and Judy, and three boys: Ron, Dale and Bill. On September 26, 1949, wonder number eight arrived, a fourth son they named Daniel.
With quite a span between the four oldest and the four youngest children, Dan and his closest siblings couldn't remember a time when all eight of them lived in the same house at the same time. Dan grew up in Walker, an area in those days of fields, orchards, woods and gravel pits. It was the perfect setting for a young boy to play and grow. In the summer, the kids in the area would go to the gravel pits to go swimming and fishing. Any outdoor activity was fine with them. As Dan grew older, his playmates changed from brothers to friends his own age.
He attended Grandville High School and eventually earned his General Education Degree (GED) from Wyoming. Although not one for 'book learning', Dan was smart in the learning of life. He held several different jobs after high school, finally settling at Michigan Bumper. It was here that he was introduced to a friend of a co-worker's wife, a pretty lady named Janet Cadwell. Daniel was attracted to Janet and the two began dating. Janet had two young daughters, Wendy and Patty, and Daniel welcomed them into his heart as if they were his own. The four became a family when Daniel and Janet said, 'I do' in October of 1974. The marriage lasted until 1992 and a lot of good times were had during those 18 years.
The family lived in Standale for a few years and then moved to Byron Center. Dan loved being a father to Wendy and Patty. Janet was usually the disciplinarian, but when things got hectic, Dan was called in to settle matters once and for all. Janet took care of things inside the house and Dan took care of the outside. He enjoyed working on cars in the pole barn, and being pretty handy mechanically, he could handle most of the regular maintenance and simpler problems by himself. But being a smart man, Dan knew his limits. The house was surrounded by a big yard, and Dan loved riding his tractor around and around, mowing the lawn. He also had a green thumb and grew wonderful squash, corn, onions, tomatoes and rhubarb in his garden. As much as he enjoyed being outside, Dan tackled chores inside the home as well. He did quite a bit of remodeling, ranging from simple decorating to installing new cupboards.

It was not all work and no play for Dan Briggs. The family had a tradition of annual camping trips to Newaygo - done the way camping was supposed to be done. No hardtop or pop-up campers for him. Their home away from home was a tent. He and Janet did have the luxury of sleeping on cots but the girls put their sleeping bags right on the ground. These trips also gave Dan a chance to indulge in his favorite pastime - fishing. With all the lakes in the area, he had plenty of choices for a fishing hole. He and the girls would take the boat and head out together. The girls were encouraged to do it all - bait the hook, remove the fish - but if there was a chance of them getting hurt, it was Dad to the rescue. Dan also enjoyed hunting and tried to arrange a deer-hunting trip each year. He had hunted as a boy, but it was too hard to pick the BB's out of the rabbits.
During his years at Michigan Bumper, Dan became very involved with the UAW, especially around election time. It wasn't enough to just take someone else's word for it. Daniel wanted to know all there was to know about the issues and he researched the candidates to see just what they stood for. His choice was the person he felt was looking out for the workingman. When asked his opinion, Dan would give it freely. He never forced his beliefs on others but he made sure you knew where he stood. Once his mind was made up, he rarely changed it. When not keeping up with union issues, Dan kept up with other current affairs by reading the paper and watching the news regularly. He also liked to watch sports on TV, including the Detroit Lions and NASCAR racing.
When Michigan Bumper began downsizing, Dan found other jobs, usually driving truck. He was not a complainer, but other people's driving could get him going. His first routes took him as far away as Texas but he preferred to stay close to home. No matter the job, Dan liked work. Even if he had a bad day or an unpleasant incident, he always looked forward to going to work. Most recently he had been working at Kentwood Packaging.
Dan was a quiet man and would rather spend his time at home. He did like to have friends visit and would engage visitors in a card game or board game. Those who knew Dan well, knew that his gruff personality disguised a man with a good sense of humor. He could be very talkative and friendly. Although he wasn't always smiling, he could put a smile on others with his great impersonation of Jonathan Winters.
Sadly, Daniel never had the chance to retire. His dream was to have a house on a lake so he would have more time to fish. He hated Michigan winters and told his daughters he would move to Florida or Arizona. But with daughters and grandchildren close by, Michigan would probably have continued to be his home.
A number of years ago, Daniel began experiencing health problems, including Buerger's Disease, a symptom of which is a clogging of the arteries. This made working difficult, and although Daniel was able to work, he was not able to do all that he had done before. Daniel Briggs died of a massive heart attack on December 19, 2005.
Daniel F. Briggs, age 56 of Cutlerville, passed away December 19, 2005. He is survived by his children Wendy and Rick Milner of Greenville and Patty Knutson; grandchildren Symphony, Sierra, Jered Milner and Christopher, Crystal and Daniel Knutson; siblings Ruth Vredeveld, Bonnie (Leon) Garvin, Ron (Arlene) Briggs, Shirley (John) Koehler, Dale (Andrea) Briggs, Judy (Henry) Romeyn, and Bill (Jaci) Briggs; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. A service to celebrate Dan's life will be held on Friday, December 23 at 2:30 PM at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home - Alt & Shawmut Hills Chapel, 2120 Lake Michigan Drive NW where friends and relatives are invited to meet with his family on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM and on Friday from 1:30 PM until the time of the service.
