Anyone whowants to get married in NY must get a Marriage License first. Here is information about the steps that you will need to take to get a Marriage License so that you can get married.

A marriagelicense costs $35 and you can pay by credit card or money order (make itpayable to the City Clerk).

A NYMarriage License is valid for 60 days (it is valid for 180 days for active militarypersonnel but only 60 days for everyone else). You can use your marriage license to get married anywhere in NY, but itmay not be used outside NY.

1. You begin the process online or byfilling out a paper form for a Marriage License. The online process is faster.
2. After you fill out the application(online or in person) you then complete the process by appearing with your fiancéat the Office of the City Clerk in person (make sure you go to this officetogether not separately). You cannothave someone else go with you for your fiancé if they cannot attend, you willbe turned away if you do not show up with the person you intend to marry.
3. You then get the application fromthe information desk and complete it there in their office.
4. They will process your MarriageLicense while you wait.
5. Make sure to check it for mistakesbefore you leave.
6. Now that you have your certificateyou are free to get married after 24 hours.

You willneed these items:

• You andyour fiancé must bring proper identification.
• You mustfill in your: 1) names; 2) current addresses; 3) city, state, ZIP code andcountry; 4) country of birth; 5) date of birth; 6) name and country of birth ofyour parents; 7) Social Security numbers; 8) and your past marital histories.
• You haveto sign an affidavit that there are no legal impediments to the married (ex. Youcannot get a marriage license while you are waiting for a divorce judgment.)
• You mustlist all prior marriages. You will need your prior spouse’s full name; the datethe divorce was granted; and the city, state and country where the divorce wasissued.
• Bring acopy of any divorce judgments.
• If yourprior spouse died, bring a copy of the death certificate.

You canchange your last name through marriage as long as the change is within the typeallowed on the back of the application. The name change will take legal effect once your Marriage Ceremony is over. You can only change your last name (not yourfirst or middle name).

What happens if I lose my Marriage License before the Ceremony takes place?

You can get a Duplicate MarriageLicense if your original is lost, stolen or mutilated. You will have to pay a $25 fee by credit cardor money order. You will need to returnto the office that issued the original and complete a Duplicate MarriageLicense affidavit.

Can I get married if I am under the age of 18?

That person has to be registered with the officeof the City Clerk before the wedding. You can call 311 to verify whether they are registered with the CityClerk’s office. Once your Ceremony isover, you, your spouse, the Officiant and the witnesses must sign the MarriageLicense. Then the Officiant must returnthe Marriage License to the office where it was obtained within 5 businessdays.
